Nelson 04:34
It’s so easy to be angry
But the anger’s hard to hold
So I’m heading out to Nelson
Where your story should be told All you wanted was our future
When you left me at the shore
All you took with you was everything
How could someone ask for more? What’s 12, 000 miles to me?
When it was everything to you
If I see the light that’s saving souls
Maybe… it might start to save me too? You were so proud of what you carried
 And the legacy you’d build
Us both barely out of childhood
With a promise, unfulfilled So I’m heading out to Nelson
I don’t know if I’ll return
And I’ll stand and watch the light, love
I’ll stand and watch you burn….   Your light still shines….

about

After many months of lockdown we were invited to perform at a virtual festival and rather than do some old, we set ourselves the challenge of doing something new. Something completely new to all of us in fact, as not only did we write a song from scratch, we recorded our parts at home with whatever bits of wood and string we had lying around, and then literally phoned our performances in. All credit to Fiddly, who patiently wrangled formats, edited, cut and pasted and finally produced the performance you have before you in record time and with a minimum of fuss. It is not exactly a song about The Great Unpleasantness, but it is certainly *of* it.

(Helen): I wrote the chorus really quickly, and it said exactly what I wanted it to say. So much so, in fact, that I couldn't come up with any verses that didn't sound superfluous.... So I handed it over to Shane, without telling him what was on my mind when I wrote it, and he took it somewhere new. Because that's what he does.

(Shane): Unbelievably, this is my Springsteen song, although it owes as much to The Home Service and David Bowie (‘Sorrow’ and ‘Life on Mars’ if you’re keeping score) as it does to anything on ‘Wrecking Ball’. Once we’d done the vocal I asked Helen if she’d changed a particular word on purpose. “I couldn’t read your writing” she replied. “And anyway, that’s not what I sang.”

‘Nelson’ is from a rehearsal session and has been similarly tidied up, without necessarily losing the one take authenticity for which we have rightly become so beloved.
